SDRC Selected to Develop a Robust and Efficient Networking Protocol for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) for the Air Force
SAN DIEGO, California (4/12/2006) - SDRC (San Diego Research Center, Inc.), a leader in wireless network research and system development in the defense sector, has been chosen by the Air Force through the SBIR program to develop a robust and efficient networking protocol standard for a broad spectrum of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs).
SDRC's mission is to change the paradigm of the traditional "wire"-centric wireless networking algorithms and protocols through innovative, wireless-inherent, and robust algorithms to support dynamic missions of the Air Force Network-Centric Operations with efficient resource use. According to Dr. Bo Ryu, the programs Principal Investigator (PI), "Most MANET protocols rely heavily on wired network architecture (TCP/IP), a source of low scalability and degraded performance under highly dynamic topology changes. Under this contract, SDRC's solution proposes re-architecting the TCP/IP protocol stack standard that is more fundamentally robust and more scalable for dynamic wireless environment. For example, the "new" network layer for MANET will be made more robust so the dependence on end-to-end error correction schemes via retransmission, one of the major sources of poor performance of TCP for wireless networks, can be minimized." The resulting algorithms and protocols will be available as IETF MANET Working Group drafts and publications.
The Phase I Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program, entitled "Robust and Efficient Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (RE-MANET) Protocol Standards," was funded at $99,942 on 4/12/2006.
About the SBIR program: The Department of Defense (DoD) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs fund a billion dollars each year in early-stage R&D projects at small technology companies - projects that serve a DoD need and have commercial applications. SBIR and STTR funds are awarded competitively and small companies retain the intellectual property rights to technologies they develop under these programs.
About SDRC: SDRC is a wireless technology and system development company focusing on challenging and important problems in wireless waveform design and implementation, media access control (MAC) schemes, and wireless (mobile) ad hoc network protocols development and prototype development.
