SDRC Selected to Develop Next Generation Modem Technology

SAN DIEGO, California (11/25/2003) - SDRC (San Diego Research Center, Inc.), a leader in wireless network research and system development in the defense sector, has been chosen by the Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency (DARPA) to develop next generation modem technology to provide assured military communications in extreme Electronic Warfare (EW) environments.

SDRC intends to use its expertise in Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) communications techniques to meet DARPA's objective of developing and demonstrating major performance improvements and functionalities applicable to next-generation military radios. MIMO is a breakthrough technology that has strong benefits for future communications systems. SDRC's Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Harry Lee commented, "Despite the enormous potential of MIMO, comparatively little has been done to exploit MIMO opportunities for military applications.  In this program we intend to focus the technique on military mobile applications including radio jamming and interference.

This Phase 1 Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program, "Next-Generation Modem Technology for High Threat Environments," is funded at $98,950.

About the SBIR program: The Department of Defense (DoD) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and  Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs fund a billion dollars each year in early-stage R&D projects at small technology companies - projects that serve a DoD need and have commercial applications. SBIR and STTR funds are awarded competitively and small companies retain the intellectual property rights to technologies they develop under these programs.

About SDRC: SDRC is a wireless technology research and system development company focusing on challenging and important opportunities in government and commercial communications markets.

About DARPA: DARPA is the central research and development organization for the Department of Defense (DoD) . It manages and directs selected basic and applied research and development projects for DoD, and pursues research and technology where risk and payoff are both very high and where success may provide dramatic advances for traditional military roles and missions.
