SDRC Team Selected to Develop a Protocol Suite for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks for the Army's Future Force Program
SAN DIEGO, California (11/28/2005) - SDRC (San Diego Research Center, Inc.) and Telcordia Technologies have been selected by the Army to develop a coordinated, seamless multi-layer soft handoff protocol suite for mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) for the Army's Future Force Program. The team's approach is to utilize a proactive "make before break" approach to send information over multiple paths combined with efficient coding techniques. This approach will significantly improve service reliability and user perceived Quality of Service (QoS), and achieve optimal network resource utilization through cross-layer interactions.
Dr. Bo Ryu, SDRC's Principal Investigator (PI) on this program, noted that, "To date, no existing research or implementation of seamless soft handoff for mobile ad hoc networks or Future Force Networks exists. This is significant because the mobile wireless ad-hoc network that will support Future Force will be characterized by frequent node movement combined with a volatile RF environment. A network with these characteristics results in fluctuation in link quality and hence frequent network topology change, severely hampering the reliable data transmission which is a key performance indicator for a Future Force battlefield network." The SDRC team effort will directly address and mitigate these environmental characteristics and effects.
This Phase 1 Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program, entitled "Seamless Soft Handoff Protocols," is funded at $69,728 on 11/28/2005.
About the SBIR program: The Department of Defense (DoD) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs fund a billion dollars each year in early-stage R&D projects at small technology companies - projects that serve a DoD need and have commercial applications. SBIR and STTR funds are awarded competitively and small companies retain the intellectual property rights to technologies they develop under these programs.
About SDRC: SDRC is a wireless technology research and system development company focusing on challenging and important opportunities in government and commercial communications markets.
About Telcordia Technologies: Telcordia Technologies provides open, flexible, and configurable software and services for wireline, mobile, cable, government, and equipment supplier markets around the globe. The company's offerings include: operations support systems, network services software, consulting, testing services, and research services.
