SDRC Chosen to Design and Develop Burst Mode, High Data Rate, Full Duplex Communication Links in Support of Army's FCS Vision

SAN DIEGO, California (12/19/2001) - SDRC (San Diego Research Center, Inc.), a leader in wireless network research and system development in the defense sector, has been chosen by the Army to design and develop a communications modem for the Army's Future Combat System (FCS). This modem is being architected so that it can be integrated with a multi-function RF sensor capability, thus providing communications functionality using existing radar RF and antenna front end electronics.

SDRC's program will research, explore, and design modulation and demodulation architectures to support burst mode (<10 usecs), high data rate (>100MB/s) full duplex millimeter wave (MMW) communication links. SDRC will demonstrate the architecture's validity through modeling and simulation. The company's Principal Investigator, Dr. Harry Lee commented, "This effort will pave the way for a significant reduction in system costs for communications and radar capabilities in FCS vehicles."

The  Phase 1 Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program, entitled "Burst Mode, High Data Rate Communication Links with Narrow Beam Directional Antennas," was funded at $119,975 on 12/19/2001.

About the SBIR program: The Department of Defense (DoD) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and  Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs fund a billion dollars each year in early-stage R&D projects at small technology companies - projects that serve a DoD need and have commercial applications. SBIR and STTR funds are awarded competitively and small companies retain the intellectual property rights to technologies they develop under these programs.

About SDRC: SDRC is a wireless technology research and system development company focusing on challenging and important opportunities in government and commercial communications markets.
